Job Title: Librarian
Reports To:Β Head Librarian / Immediate Superior
Job Summary:
The Librarian serves as an instructional partner, information specialist, teacher, and program administrator, working collaboratively to build and strengthen connections between student information needs, curricular content, learning outcomes, and information resources. This role is essential in creating an environment conducive to active learning, promoting literacy, and preparing students for success in the 21st century.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & School Engagement:

Benchmark the School Library Program (SLP) to school and Cambridge Curriculum standards
-
Serve on decision-making teams, school improvement, and accreditation committees
-
Share expertise by presenting at faculty and parent meetings
-
Maintain active membership in professional associations
-
Remain current in professional practices, information technologies, and educational research
-
Advocate for the SLP and guiding principles of the school library profession
Instructional Partnership:
-
Collaborate with teachers to design engaging learning experiences incorporating multiple literacies
-
Participate in implementing collaboratively planned learning experiences and assessing student progress
-
Encourage inclusion of literacy skills (information, media, visual, digital, technological) in curricula
-
Plan meaningful experiences promoting reading and lifelong learning
-
Provide professional development opportunities related to the SLP
-
Organize the resource collection for maximum and effective use
Information Specialist:
-
Develop and maintain a collection of resources appropriate to curriculum, learners, and teaching styles
-
Cooperate and network with other libraries, librarians, and agencies for resource access
-
Evaluate, promote, and use existing and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning
-
Provide guidance in software and hardware evaluation
-
Ensure understanding and observance of copyright, fair use, and intellectual property licensing
Teacher Responsibilities:
-
Guide students in reading for understanding, exposure to diverse viewpoints, and pleasure
-
Assist students in using information for defined and self-defined purposes
-
Support students in building on prior knowledge and constructing new knowledge
-
Encourage engagement with information in all formats
-
Facilitate successful peer collaboration for learning
-
Help students constructively assess their own learning and their peers’ work
Program Administration:
-
Use strategic planning for continuous program improvement
-
Ensure SLP goals align with the school’s long-range strategic plans
-
Administer the SLP budget to support specific program goals
-
Supervise personnel, resources, and facilities (may include assistant librarians, volunteers, and student assistants)
-
Use evidence of practice, particularly learning outcomes, to support program goals
-
Conduct ongoing action research and evaluation for continuous improvement
-
Establish standardized processes for selection, acquisition, circulation, and resource sharing
-
Create and maintain an inviting, safe, flexible learning environment
-
Select and use effective technological applications for management purposes
-
Participate in recruiting, hiring, and training library staff
-
Schedule the school library to maximize student accessibility
Communication & Public Relations:
-
Share up-to-date school and MOEHE policies (materials selection, circulation, copyright)
-
Collect and analyze data to demonstrate correlations between the SLP and student achievement
-
Maintain frequent and timely communication with stakeholders (school webpage, newsletters, email)
-
Maintain an effective public relations program for the library
-
Submit regular reports providing evidence of library contributions to student success
-
Use local, national, and international library data to engage support
-
Speak clearly, honestly, and respectfully
-
Provide and receive feedback to improve performance
Organizational Duties:

Maintain accurate records for meetings
-
Attend all meetings consistently and punctually
-
Use school resources wisely and maintain a clean, organized workspace
-
Support administrators, teachers, and support staff
-
Adhere to school policies and procedures
-
Model and encourage cultural awareness and understanding
Other Duties:

Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate superior
Job Requirements:
-
Educational Qualification:Β Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
-
Professional Experience:Β Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Library Media Teacher
-
Licenses/Certifications:Β Certification from an accredited Master’s Level program in Library and Information Science (including 24 hours of Library Media Studies) OR a Master’s in Library Science (MLS) degree
